‘Probably the Best I’ve Ever Played..’: Injured Jordan Spieth Piles the Blame on ‘Golf Gods’ After Unfortunate Rotten Luck

The 2023 PGA Championship got off to a rocky start at New York’s Oak Hill Country Club on Thursday, with disappointing outings from many big-name contenders. Fan favorite and World No. 10 Jordan Spieth was among the players who had a challenging first day out on the greens.

However, in spite of his struggles with a recent wrist injury, Spieth has been able to narrowly keep his head above water as the major heads into the weekend. The 29-year-old even opened up about his on-course struggles as he vies to win his first-ever Wanamaker Trophy.

Jordan Spieth expresses displeasure with performance at Oak Hill

Spieth was just a few days short of his 24th birthday when he clinched the Open Championship title in 2017. The win marked the 3rd major victory for the golfer, who is now one PGA Championship win away from completing a career grand slam.

However, Spieth hasn’t been so lucky lately. After missing the cut at the Wells Fargo Championship earlier this month, the 3-time major winner withdrew from the recently-concluded Byron Nelson event due to his wrist injury. Now, his troubles seem to have followed him into the PGA

The Dallas native only managed to post an underwhelming opening three-over-par 73 as the likes of Scottie Scheffler, Bryson DeChambeau, and Rory McIlroy persevered on Thursday. So, what did Spieth think of his opening-round performance? “I played really well. That was probably the best I’ve ever played to shoot three-over in my entire life,” expressed the golfer. He further talked about feeling somewhat deserted by the golf gods.

After all, the golfer was significantly relying on a sheer stroke of luck, given his limited practice due to injury-related troubles. “I came in thinking I was probably the least prepared I’d ever been for a major, so I was hoping to get the golf gods on my side. I got the opposite. ” said Spieth. “I played better than I thought I would and didn’t quite get the results.”
