‘Biggest Legacy’: Rory McIlroy Divulges the Hard Hitting Reason Behind Tiger Woods’ PGA Tour Policy Update

The golf world was turned upside down almost 2 months ago when the merger between the former rivals: PGA Tour, DP World Tour, and LIV Golf was announced. The decision was unexpected for players and fans alike. One of the most prominent golfers, Tiger Woods maintained his silence on the merger and did not give any statement regarding the $3 billion amalgamation between the former rivals.

Now, it has been just a few days since the golf great broke his silence and was appointed as the sixth member of the PGA Tour Policy Board. Woods’ fellow policy board member, Rory McIlroy recently sat down and spoke about the possible reason for Woods being appointed as the final player director on the board.

When the 82X PGA Tour Champion was appointed as the sixth member of the board, people all around had different reactions.

A few fellow golfers such as Justin Thomas, praised Woods’ decision while, on the other hand, a few members of the golf world had their inhibitions about the decision. But if there was anything that seemed right Woods would put the players’ interest first.

Recently, the Northern Irishman sat down with the media at TPC Southwind, where the golfers are competing in the first FedEx playoff, the FedEx St. Jude Championship. An interviewer asked the Irishman about his thoughts on the recent PGA Tour policy update involving the golf legend. McIlroy referred to the decision as a “great addition.”

He said that Woods is one of the players with the “biggest legacy” on the Tour and for him to be involved in the discussions around the future of professional golf is very important. His involvement will help in shaping the future of the game.

The Irish golfer then shared that the 15X major champion actually has a vote in everything that happens on the PGA Tour. Shedding some more light on Woods’ appointment, McIlroy appreciated his fellow golfer’s decision to join the board.

The 5X Masters champion has been out of the greens for most of the 2023 season. He was last seen competing at Augusta during the beginning of the season, and after that, the golfer withdrew from almost all of the events owing to his recovery. During his press conference, McIlroy pointed out that all the player directors try to manage the golf tournaments along with navigating other things on the side.

He said that the Golf Hall of Famer probably has more time on his hands, as compared to other player directors, and for him to step in and take the load off of the player directors is “much appreciated.”
