‘Kind of Feel Bad’: Jordan Spieth Sympathizes With Dustin Johnson Ahead of the 2021 Masters
Jordan Spieth hasn’t won the Masters since his maiden triumph in 2015. He finished 46th in 2020 with a score of 1-under par, but that experience was unlike any other, for the 27-year-old. While Spieth achieved a disappointing finish, Dustin Johnson roared to victory with a record score.
The Masters traditionally take place every year, but the pandemic pushed last year’s schedule and we’re now witnessing two Masters tournaments within the span of four odd months. While it is exciting for the players, Dustin Johnson alone would have a slight regret about it.
Only three players currently have the privilege of ranking as back-to-back Masters winners. The first one to do it was Jack Nicklaus, followed by Nick Faldo, and then Tiger Woods. Dustin Johnson will join these legendary golfers if he manages to win at Augusta this year.
Jordan Spieth feels history is against Dustin Johnson at the Masters
Dustin Johnson won his first green jacket at Augusta by shattering the 18-under mark set by Tiger Woods (1997) and Jordan Spieth (2015).
His aggregate of 268 became the story of the year, but unless he manages to repeat the victory, Johnson would have to part ways with the prestigious jacket, sooner than other champions in history.
Jordan Spieth brought it up during his press-conference ahead of the Valero Texas Open as well:
“The only one I kind of feel bad about for is Dustin [Johnson] because you know unless he were to repeat. He didn’t really get the jacket for more than five months, unless they let him keep it till next November,” Spieth told the reporters.
