Iga Swiatek shares what she told Elina Svitolina after upset loss against Ukrainian
Iga Swiatek reveals she told Elina Svitolina at the net that she is now rooting for her to leave The Championships with her first Grand Slam title. Swiatek, seeded at No 1, was upset by Svitolina in the Wimbledon quarterfinal as the Ukrainian beat the Pole 7-5 6-7 (5) 6-2.
Svitolina, 28, gave birth in October and she was out for 13 months before returning to tennis in April. Swiatek, 22, has a good relationship with Svitolina and she shared a moment with the Ukrainian at the net following their match.“I think overall, looking at her career, having [a] Grand Slam title would be pretty amazing for her.
She’s coming back after becoming a mother. I’ll root for her, especially because we like each other as people. I told her on the net that I hope she win this tournament. You know how it is in tennis: it’s tough to win a Grand Slam.
I know that for sure she wants it really bad. So I will be rooting for her, yeah,” Swiatek said.
Swiatek on if playing against Svitolina had an emotional impact on her
Last year, Swiatek organized a charity event for Ukraine and Svitolina was present at the event.
At the time, Svitolina was praising Swiatek in many ways. After Swiatek lost to Svitolina at Wimbledon, the Pole was asked if playing a good friend like Svitolina had an emotional impact on her performance.“Since I was really, like, 13, I played against my best friends sometimes.
I managed to kind of just focus on tennis and not think about that. I’m leaving everything that is going on usually off court outside of the match. I think Elina did that, as well. So I played the same kind of tennis. I was focused the same way. I wouldn’t say it had impact on me,” Swiatek said.
