Andy Murray puts Stefanos Tsitsipas spat to one side ahead of Wimbledon blockbuster clash
Andy Murray insists his US Open spat with Stefanos Tsitsipas is all water under the u-bend ahead of their reunion on Centre Court. The Scot was furious when the Greek took an eight-minute bathroom break during their five-setter at the 2021 US Open – comparing it to Jeff Bezos’s space mission the following day on Twitter.
“Fact of the day,” Murray wrote. “It takes Stefanos Tsitsipas twice as long to go to the bathroom as it takes Jeff Bezos to fly into space. Interesting.” Murray subsequently got his on-court revenge on the grass of Stuttgart last year and, having cleared the air with the 24-year-old at the Laver Cup in September, rather regrets his angry outburst in the immediate aftermath of a painful defeat.
“I said to the referee I didn’t want to do a press conference because I knew exactly how it was going to go,” Murray recalled. “I was really angry after that match and I was really disappointed with what happened. My feeling on the toilet break rules, there wasn’t really any rule at the time. And it was getting abused a little bit.
“The bathroom break rules were rewritten, which is a good thing. And I like him. I think he’s a good guy. He has been in the top 10 of the world for a while now. He has been to the latter stages of multiple Slams. A classy tennis player. It is definitely a step up. I will need to be on my game to beat him.”
“That court over there is almost like his living room. I hope I can play on Centre Court, the furthest I’ve played is Court One.” Touchingly, though, he revealed that as a kid he had been inspired by Murray’s finest ever hour there – his victory in the 2013 final against Novak Djokovic.
