Andy Murray ‘requests French Open bosses break decades-long tradition’ for big farewell

Andy Murray has put in a bold request to the French Open organisers as he prepares to play the tournament for the final time. The former world No. 1 previously outlined his plans to play doubles with Dan Evans at the clay-court Grand Slam in preparation for the Olympics, which will also take place at Stade Roland Garros.

But their ranking is expected to be too low to get them directly into the main draw.

Murray is set to say farewell to the French Open after sharing his plans to stop playing after the summer. The three-time Major winner has not competed in the tournament since 2020 but he will be back for one last hurrah next week.

And he is making the most of his time in Paris as he plans to play both singles and doubles.

The 37-year-old entered the doubles event with Evans to get some extra matches on the clay courts ahead of the Olympics. Murray is understood to be partnering with Joe Salisbury at the Games while Evans will join forces with Neal Skupski.

The 37-year-old entered the doubles event with Evans to get some extra matches on the clay courts ahead of the Olympics. Murray is understood to be partnering with Joe Salisbury at the Games while Evans will join forces with Neal Skupski.

But as seasoned doubles players, Salisbury and Skupski will be playing with their regular partners instead of their Olympic counterparts.

However, according to i, Murray and Evans have been forced to request a wildcard as their combined ranking of No. 144 is nine spots too low to meet the cut-off for the doubles main draw.

But it’s a big ask, as the French Tennis Federation traditionally awards its seven wildcards to all-French pairings.
