Andy Murray’s mum makes impassioned plea as Brit admits he ‘won’t play past summer’

Andy Murray’s mum Judy has urged the tennis world to let the three-time Grand Slam champion “enjoy whatever time is left of his career” after he announced that he would likely retire this summer. The former world No. 1 has been bombarded with retirement questions since going on a losing run at the end of last season. And Judy affirmed that her son had nothing left to prove to anyone.

Murray all but announced his retirement on Wednesday as he revealed when he was planning to stop playing professional tennis. Speaking after he lost to Ugo Humbert in Dubai, the 36-year-old said: “I’m likely not going to play past this summer. I get asked about it after every single match that I play, every single tournament that I play. I’m bored of the question, to be honest.

“Yeah, I’m not going to talk more about that between now and whenever the time comes for me to stop. But yeah, I don’t plan on playing much past this summer.” It brought an end to months of speculation about whether Murray would soon hang up his racket following a rough patch which saw him go on a six-match losing streak from October to February.

Murray’s mum Judy has now spoken out following the world No. 67’s admission, as she blasted the endless questions her son received about the end of his career and pleaded tennis fans to let him enjoy the time he had left. “Every single press confernece he is asked the same question,” she wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter).

“When he started on @atptour it was ‘ah but when r u going to win Wimbledon?’ Every single time.” Now that Murray has answered the question about stopping his career, his mum reminded the tennis world of his achievements.

The Scottish tennis coach added: “Let him enjoy whatever time is left of his career. He is 50 in the world, has a metal hip, a bipartite patella + 4 kids. And nothing to prove to anybody.” It’s not the first time Murray and his family have been forced to hit back at retirement comments.
