Tiger Woods can wreck Rory McIlroy’s dream as golf icon tipped as next Ryder Cup captain

Team USA will have revenge on their mind looking ahead to Bethpage in 2025 while Rory McIlroy and co are already dreaming up an unbeaten streak after their demolition of Zach Johnson’s team in Rome. The Northern Irishman was at his very best as he picked up four points out of a possible five to lead the Europeans to glory as USA’s woes across the Atlantic continued.

Major changes are needed in the American team looking ahead to 2025 with Johnson almost certainly not retaining his place at the captain. Players such as Brooks Koepka, Scottie Scheffler, Max Homa, Collin Morikawa and Xander Schauffele will all likely be there playing but the door is open for other players to make a claim over the next two years.

One golfer almost certain to not be in with a chance of playing is 15-time major winner Woods. The 47-year-old has had a rough 2023 having not played since withdrawing from The Masters.

But Paul Azinger has indicated that Woods will likely be involved in the next Ryder Cup as USA’s captain. Bethpage is one of several courses to become synonymous with Woods’ career as he obliterated the field at the 2002 US Open round the tough course.

It’s a place Woods knows better than most and there’s arguably no other player who could fire up the American crowd better than arguably the greatest golfer of all time. Woods being named as Team USA’s next captain almost seems a no-brainer and he’s already had some practice in the role.
