‘Not Patrick Reed’: Justin Thomas Under the Heat of Golf Fans After His ‘Cringe AF’ Video Goes Viral
It has not been the best of months for Justin Thomas. His poor form continued for the majority of 2023. Then his selection in the Ryder Cup squad, despite his abysmal form, has been mired in controversy. Moreover, his subpar performance at the Ryder Cup so far didn’t exactly prove the naysayers wrong.
Now, once again, he finds himself in hot waters. However, this time it’s his gesture to the rival fans that drew the ire of netizens, courtesy of a viral video.
Jason Sobel of Action Network posted a video of Justin Thomas putting a hole, commenting that despite his poor form, the two-time Major winner had been the most “passionate” player in the USA Ryder Cup squad. However, his comments backfired when most fans pointed out that his antics had taken precedence over his playing.
In the video, the 30-year-old golfer is seen tipping his hat off after putting, except that he didn’t have a hat on. Understandably, it was a retort to the European supporters’ gesture towards his teammate Patrick Cantlay. However, fans didn’t like it one bit. One exasperated fan wrote, “Cring AF, if we are being honest.”
Team USA finds itself trailing 6 points behind Europe’s 11midway through the final day of singles. With that in mind, another fan, pointing out the irony behind the post, wrote, “Passion without points, not exactly the winning formula is it?”
Another fan, too, was not at all happy with his performance over the weekend. The USA fan feels the two-time Ryder Cupper should give his attention to playing rather than wasting his energy on the antics. “He’s lost two and tied one game out of three—maybe he should focus less on his antics and more on his games?”
Voicing the same concern and pointing out how he failed to qualify automatically and his selection hanged on the captain’s nod, this user wrote, “He was a captain’s pick to win… not to cheerlead.” Seconding him, another user wrote, “Stop this narrative. His pick cost us having a fighting chance at the cup.”
