Andy Murray jokes his daughter ‘won’t hug him at school’ due to his tennis ranking
Andy Murray joked he faces a tough home crowd whether he does well at Wimbledon or not.
The Brit star takes to the grass on Monday, ten years on from his last title at the All-England, where he will play Ryan Peniston in the first round on Tuesday in the hope of progressing.
However, one person in his family might not be so impressed if he does – his seven-year-old daughter Sophia.
A former world No 1, three-time Grand Slam champion including two Wimbledon wins, double Olympic gold medallist and Davis Cup winner, you’d think having Murray in your family would be something you’d shout from the rooftops.
But according to Murray, that’s not the case.
“My eldest daughter is aware now of what I do but I don’t think she really sees it as a good thing,” Murray said ahead of this summer’s Wimbledon.
“I think she gets more embarrassed by it to be honest. We went to pick her up from school on Friday and she will never properly acknowledge me at the school gates or around the other kids at school.
“I asked her that night, ‘Why wouldn’t you give me a hug at school today?’ She said, ‘Because people know you – you’re no.39 in tennis or something!’
“She doesn’t see it as a cool thing, it is more than embarrassing.”
Despite feeling unsure about her dad being in the spotlight, Sophia does call him ‘Andy Murray’ in front of her school friends instead of ‘dad’.
So maybe a Wimbledon win this summer won’t be so bad after all.
If Murray beats Peniston, the Scot will face former US Open champion Dominic Thiem or Stefanos Tsitsipas in the second round.
