Iga Swiatek issues health update at Wimbledon after food poisoning in Bad Homburg
World No 1 Iga Swiatek has confirmed that she is expecting to be fine at Wimbledon after suffering suspected food poisoning in Bad Homburg.Yesterday, Swiatek announced she was withdrawing from her Bad Homburg semifinal match after “having a restless night” and suffering suspected food poisoning.
On Saturday, Swiatek held her pre-tournament press conference, where she dismissed concerns regarding her condition. “I’m okay. I had a really bad night. We did with my conditioning coach like measurements in the morning.
They didn’t really look good because I barely slept. I had a stomach ache, but I don’t know if there was something wrong or not. Later in the day I felt okay, so I’m pretty sure it’s going to be fine,” Swiatek said in her pre-tournament press conference at Wimbledon.
Swiatek sets eyes on a deep Wimbledon run
Even though Swiatek’s Bad Homburg run ended in an unfortunate way, the positive thing was that the Pole still made her first grass semifinal at the German tournament.
By winning three matches in Bad Homburg and going undefeated, Swiatek’s confidence on the grass definitely improved. Now, Swiatek says the best players can play on all surfaces as that’s her way of very openly saying she is coming for the Wimbledon title.
“For sure, like deeply I believe the best players, they can play on all surfaces. I want to kind of become that kind of player who can play well on grass, as well, and feel comfortable there. I’m doing my best to just work on my skills.
Last year I feel like we’ve done a pretty good job with my coach in terms of my touch and getting back slices and also playing slice sometimes. This year I feel like we had more time to kind of focus on, like, the basics, more time to also play matches.
If I would have more time to play on grass, I’m pretty sure that I would be able to play better and better,” Swiatek said.Swiatek plays Zhu Lin in the Wimbledon first round.
