Iga Swiatek rewrites tennis history, but it’s just the beginning
Iga Swiatek rewrites tennis history with a record, yet another of her young career. The Polish tennis player became first in the number of weeks at the top of the world rankings with 65, in terms of tennis players still in activity.
She surpassed the Romanian Simona Halep, who so far held the record with 64. Yet another extraordinary achievement for the Warsaw native who continues to dominate the women’s circuit almost unchallenged. This latest record may be just the beginning.
At 23, with 4 Grand Slams already won, Iga aims to break other records, and to reach a much higher number of Grand Slams. The young Polish tennis player has everything on her side: age, mental and physical strength, superior tennis and few opponents of her level.
It’s not a utopia to think that she can reach at least 10 Majors and become one of the most titled tennis players in the history of women’s tennis. Iga, currently engaged on the grass of the Bad Homburg Open, has achieved great results also in this 2023, above all the victory of the Roland Garros, the third of her career out of four Grand Slams won in total.

Boris Becker thinks having healthy and strong competition may be the key for Iga Swiatek to stay motivated and win more Grand Slam tournaments. Becker, who has been a seven-time Slam champion in his career, believes knowing that there are strong rivals would be an incentive for Swiatek, already a four-time Grand Slam champion to date, to work further on her game and fuel the Poland to continue proving to be the best in the world.
Here are the German’s words to Eurosport: “The issue is rivalry. Women need it as much as men. For Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer it was important, and for Swiatek it will be important that Aryna Sabalenka continues to improve, that Muchova keep playing well, Ons Jabeur, who I want to mention here too, Coco Gauff, who I would like to see again in the final.
To me, these are the best players and when there’s healthy competition, female tennis players really enjoy themselves. They are all competitors, they want to measure themselves against each other and this is a good sign for Swiatek.” This summer Swiatek will be looking for her first big result at Wimbledon.
In her first three appearances on All England Club courts, the WTA ranking record holder only reached the round of 16 once. Grass is the one surface Swiatek hasn’t yet gotten to grips with and many are curious to find out if the Pole can take her game on grass to another level this year.
