Andy Murray gives take on Roger Federer not finishing his career at Wimbledon

Andy Murray thinks Roger Federer had a brilliant sendoff despite it not coming at Wimbledon. Federer, a former 20-time Grand Slam champion, retired from pro tennis at last year’s Laver Cup. In the final match of his career, Federer teamed up with Rafael Nadal for one doubles match.

But some felt Federer’s retirement should have come at Wimbledon – the most prestigious tournament in the world, where the Swiss is an absolute icon. Federer, who captured his first Grand Slam title at 2003 Wimbledon, is a record eight-time champion at The All England Club.

Murray on Federer not retiring at Wimbledon
“There’s no right or wrong way of finishing your career and it’s always a really difficult one for athletes. Lots of people would have said the best way for Roger Federer to finish would have been at Wimbledon but I thought the way that he finished his career on the doubles court with Rafa (Nadal) surrounded by some of the greats of the game was brilliant.

The way Rafa wants to go about it is up to him and Serena (Williams) finished at the US Open after a great run. There’s never one way of doing it. It’s whatever’s right for the individual,” Murray told Sky Sports. Murray, who turned 36 last month, is often receiving questions about his own retirement.

In an interview with Sky Sports, Murray highlighted he is hoping that this year’s Wimbledon edition won’t be his final appearance as a tennis pro at The Championships. Also, Murray noted he wants to go out on his own terms.

At Wimbledon, Murray is a two-time champion and it is not a secret that he is dreaming of having at least one more deep run at The All England Club before putting a curtain on his career. It remains to be seen if Murray can turn back the clock and make a strong Wimbledon run this summer.
