Andy Murray shares Wimbledon ‘goal’ as Brit moves one step closer to defying the odds
Andy Murray hopes to use the momentum from his Surbiton Trophy success to enter the seeding for Wimbledon during the grass-court season. The 36-year-old started his Nottingham Open campaign on Tuesday, two days after lifting his first grass title since 2016.
And he kept his winning streak going in Nottingham, beating the Netherlands’ Joris De Loore 6-3 6-4.
Murray is No 44 in the ATP world rankings and hasn’t breached the top 32 since April 16, 2018.
However, with three weeks to go until Wimbledon 2023 commences, Murray is eyeing a place among the seeded players in SW19.
He said: “I’ve got a day off [tomorrow], but I’ll come in and try to get a little bit more used to the conditions, the courts, and rest up in the afternoon.
“I want to get as deep as possible and try and get close to seeding for Wimbledon. That’s my goal for the next few weeks, so hopefully, I can get a bit closer this week.”
Murray suffered an early exit at last year’s Wimbledon, losing 4-6 6-7(4) 7-6(3) 4-6 against 24th-seeded American John Isner in the second round.
But he has made his aspirations of reaching the second week of this year’s competition clear as he hits his stride on the grass.
