Camila in Birmingham and the ATP in Halle and Queen’s
Camila was defeated in the first round of the Birmingham tournament, the WTA 250 this week.
The Italian was eliminated by US legend Venus Williams in three sets, with the result 7-6, 4-6, 7-6. The former number one of Italy only raises the level of her game in the second set, but it’s only a parenthesis of a match where she’s never really in focus.
In the third set, the American gives up for the first time when she is called to serve for the match she gets distracted. Thus, the tiebreaker is inevitable. And it’s infinite, like the whole match. The two chase each other, to the sound of free winners and mistakes, but it is she who wins in the end.
At the ATP 500 in Halle, the top two seeds of the tournament are off to a good start. Stefanos Tsitsipas obtains a very painful victory against the Frenchman Barrere: 6-7, 6-4, 7-6 for the Greek, who proves to still have many difficulties on this surface.
The victory of the seeded number one, Daniil Medvedev, was much less turbulent, overcoming the American Giron on his debut with the result of 6-4, 6-3 and achieving victory number 40 of the season. Lorenzo Musetti wins in the first round at the Queen’s tournament, on the London lawns.
The Italian tennis player beat the British Jan Choinski, wild card of the tournament, with the result of 6-4, 6-2 in just over an hour of play. For the number two of Italy there is still a phase of adaptation to this surface, not fully assimilated, but the match against the British offers good ideas.
Not always perfect, as in a first set in which he makes a comeback after gaining the advantage in the third game. The Briton, however, makes a lot of mistakes, forcing the search for angles not his and gives another turn of service to Musetti, who makes no mistake when he goes to serve for the set.
In the second, the plot doesn’t change: a perfect lob is just the pearl of a snatched tour of duty. Which repeats itself again, to easily reach the second round: here the young American Ben Shelton will be waiting for him.
