Brooks Koepka told he’s “too good” for LIV Golf after PGA Championship win

Brooks Koepka has been told he is “too good” or LIV Golf by one of his fellow professionals after he secured the PGA Championship title on Sunday.

Koepka saw off world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and Viktor Hovland to win his fifth major title, and third PGA Championship.

There was added meaning to his victory, with the American becoming the first LIV golfer to win a major title since the breakaway circuit’s formation last summer.

Much had been said heading into this year’s majors, with LIV’s critics questioning whether the rebel players would still have what it takes to compete with their PGA Tour rivals.

Koepka though has more than debunked the claims, with his victory in Rochester coming just weeks after his tied-second finish at the Masters alongside fellow LIV star Phil Mickelson.

One man who is less than convinced by the standard of LIV Golf, though, is DP World Tour pro Eddie Pepperell, who has been a vocal critic of the series.

Taking to Twitter after Koepka’s win on Sunday, Pepperell wrote: “A lot of LIV/Brooks stuff going around today… Here’s my input; LIV is ideal for Brooks. He’s clearly only cared for the majors since 2017, so why not get paid a ton of cash to play when you hardly care.

“It’s perfect for him. But love watching him do his stuff at the majors.”

The English star was questioned by one fan, who claims Koepka’s two victories on the breakaway circuit ‘invalidate’ his claim that Koepka’s only care is to secure victory in golf’s four major tournaments.

Pepperell however stuck by his guns, and believes the five-time major champion may have a sense of regret with his golfing ability “too good” for the standard in the rebel league. “He’s too good to be on LIV and I think it’s a shame he’s not playing against the best in the world more regularly,” he added.

“He must surely wish that too deep down in his competitive belly, but I could be wrong.”

Speaking after his victory Koepka seemed more than to have helped the LIV Golf cause with victory, as well as his own. He commented: “Yeah, I definitely think it helps LIV, but I’m more interested in my own self right now, to be honest with you.

“Yeah, it’s a huge thing for LIV, but at the same time I’m out here competing as an individual at the PGA Championship. I’m just happy to take this home for the third time.

“To win a major is always a big deal no matter where you’re playing. All it does, I just think, validates it for myself. I guess maybe if anybody doubted it from Augusta or whatever, any doubts anybody on TV might have or whatever, I’m back, I’m here.”
