Andy Murray angers tennis fans with X-rated Carlos Alcaraz post after Madrid cake-gate
Andy Murray has angered some tennis fans for failing to see the ‘bigger picture’ after an X-rated tweet over the Carlos Alcaraz cake-gate saga. The Scot celebrated his birthday on Monday and asked for a cake at least the same size as the Spaniard’s despite the furore over Alcaraz being given a bigger cake than Aryna Sabalenka at the Madrid Open.
May 5 was a big day for birthdays in the world of tennis as ATP and WTA No 2s Alcaraz and Sabalenka turned 20 and 25 respectively. They were both featuring in the Madrid Open at the time but the cakes they received whipped up a storm.
Alcaraz had played on the day and received a huge two-tier cake with sparklers on court after beating Borna Coric in straight sets to advance to the final. In contrast, Sabalenka had been enjoying a day off as she prepared for her own final appearance and was presented with a smaller one-tier cake behind the scenes.
The gestures received a furious response in some quarters with the likes of Victoria Azarenka pointing out the difference in treatment.
Now, Murray has appeared to make light of the situation much to the disdain of some tennis fans. The two-time Wimbledon champion celebrated his 36th birthday on Monday and asked for a cake the size of Alcaraz’s in X-rated fashion.
