Leylah Fernandez describes No. 1 rank as ultimate goal in tennis
Leylah Fernandez wants to be great and she’s shown potential to be great in the past with the number one rank as a clear goal.
Leylah Fernandez hasn’t been playing tennis up to her standard recently but that only makes the Canadian even more motivated to do well. An ankle injury at last year’s Roland Garros several stopped her momentum with injuries being the main problem when it comes to properly breaking out.
She’s a very streaky player and needs a lot of matches to hit her peak but injuries have prevented her to do that since making a mini-breakthrough at the US Open two years ago. The goals for her were pretty clear: become a grand slam champion, be the world number one and lead Canada to Billie Jean King Cup success.
My goal is to be more consistent in tournaments, to reach the quarterfinals as many times as possible. Beyond this, my goal will always be to be No. 1 in the world, that will always be my goal, in addition to winning Grand Slams. I also I would like to end the year much better physically and mentally.
Being aware of her strengths is vital because she needs them to get where she wants to be. Consistency is the first step towards that and it’s great she’s aware of what needs to be done. Being number one takes a lot of work but she knows how gratifying it can be.
Last year, she was named as Canada’s player of the year despite missing a good chunk of the season with an injury and it was a special moment for her. Now it’s time to conquer the world and became the world’s player of the year but it will take time and patience. She’s shown both so far so let’s see how her career unfolds.
