“Zero Support From Federations”: Maria Sakkari Reveals Harsh Reality of Tennis

Greek tennis player Maria Sakkari has certainly been a source of pride to her nation with her performances in 2021. She made it to two Grand Slam semifinals at the French Open and the US Open this year.

 

 

However, even though she’s certainly enjoying herself right now, it hasn’t always been easy. Early on in her career, Maria Sakkari had to deal with many difficulties. The expenses involved in tennis are higher compared to other sports, because of which Sakkari had to go through many difficulties. The 26-year-old did not receive support from the local federations, nor did she get any help from sponsors.

 

 

Recently, Sakkari opened up about the tough early period and stated, “I was lucky to have parents like my parents because they invested a lot and I had zero support from federations or sponsors. My father paid so much for me to play tennis and I’m very grateful for what he has done and they have both done in order for me to achieve my goals.”

Coming to tennis this season, Maria has had her best year on the Tour. After being on the circuit for a considerable period, Sakkari registered some of the best results in her career. She made it to two Grand Slam semifinals, the French Open, and the US Open. She also cracked into the top 10 in the WTA Rankings.
