Rory McIlroy suffers another horror show after Phil Mickelson’s LIV Golf jibe

Rory McIlroy saw his struggles continue as a poor final round saw him miss out on victory at the Memorial Tournament. McIlroy was joint leader entering Sunday’s final round but finished tied seventh after a disappointing round of 75.

McIlroy had been in fine form on the first three days in Ohio and made a strong start to the final round to make par on the first three holes, followed by a birdie. But the 34-year-old ended the day by making three straight bogeys with his putting being at fault for a disappointing end as Viktor Hovland took victory.

And McIlroy’s latest disappointment came after rival Phil Mickelson hit out at him for his latest comments during the tournament. McIlroy claimed that golfers had ‘been advocating for an offseason’ as they grapple with the demands of the PGA Tour.

The four-time major champion faces a tough schedule with the US Open just weeks away following the Memorial Tournament. Breakaway series LIV Golf, on the other hand, holds just 14 events this calendar year, including a four-month break for players to recuperate.

Speaking about his schedule at the Memorial Tournament, McIlroy said: “We’ve all been advocating for an offseason and there’s certain reasons why guys want. It’s very hard to try to play your best golf when you’re really thinking about your golf swing.
