Iga Swiatek supports Ukraine: “We should make every effort to stop the war”

Iga Swiatek, champion of the Roland Garros 2023, has once again confirmed her support for Ukraine and she declared the importance of solidarity among tennis players to counter Russian aggression. The world number one conquered her fourth Grand Slam title by beating Karolina Muchova 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 in the final in an unforgettable match on her court Philippe-Chatrier.

During the post-match press conference, Swiatek reiterated her full support for the Ukrainian population following last year’s Russian invasion. The champion expressed her deep respect for the Ukrainian athletes who continue to compete despite the war situation in their country, saying she didn’t know if she would have been as strong in a similar situation.

She explained: “The only thing I can say is that we , as a tennis community, we should make every effort to stop the Russian aggression. My support goes to all Ukrainians, because I know their situation is not easy. If I were in their place, I don’t know if I’d be able to compete, honestly.

I respect them very much and want to continue focusing on what’s right for them.” Iga Swiatek continues to show her support for the country, by wearing a Ukraine ribbon on her visor, one of the few tennis players able to do so.

Her commitment to peace and solidarity in the tennis community is a great example for the whole world.

Victory in Paris
Third success in the last four years at the Roland Garros, fourth Grand Slam in her career and leadership in the standings confirmed.

In the end, Iga Swiatek handled the pressure quite well and defended her title won last year in Paris, confirming herself as the absolute queen of the French Open. The Pole had to overcome the negative moment experienced unexpectedly in the last act of the tournament, but she showed her muscles once again and recovered the break from disadvantage twice in the decisive set to an excellent Karolina Muchova.
