A section of the golf community has often mocked the application of world rankings. However, with all the talk about LIV golfers’ efforts to gain ranking points to qualify for tournaments, the voices around OWGR have gained significantly.
But there are many who have downplayed the importance of world ranking as a whole. Yet, current world number one Scottie Scheffler was caught in the mud after his revelations in the post-match press conference.

But not everything on Sunday was heartbreaking for Scheffler. His consistent display elevated him to the summit of the ranking leaderboard, where the 26-year-old returns as the World No. 1.
When informed about his latest achievement, Scheffler seemed interested. “Do I become No. 1 again?” he asked based on the tournament’s impact on ranking points, which prompted a nod from the reporter. However, Scheffler didn’t seem interested at the next moment. “That’s great. I mean, it’s just an algorithm. It’s nice, but I really don’t care,” he said while breaking into a chuckle.
Furthermore, the new World No. 1 cleared the air on his disinterest in his position at the world rankings. “I don’t play for world ranking. I play to come out here and compete. Right now I’m a little sad that I wasn’t able to get the tournament done, but I’m proud of how I fought. I’m proud of how I played the back nine today to give myself a chance. I got beat by somebody that played better this week, and tip of the cap to Brooks.”
Indeed, Scheffler’s appreciation of Brooks Koepka at the end spoke a thousand words, as the latter went on to triumph at the PGA Championship.
