Iga Swiatek provides injury update, addresses WTA decision to return to China

Iga Swiatek has confirmed that she has fully healed from a rib injury. Swiatek, 21, was forced to miss the Miami Open due to a rib injury. This week in Stuttgart, Swiatek is returning to action kicking off her clay season.

“I’m not injured anymore, so that’s the most important thing for me. I feel like I used that time in Warsaw well to rest a little bit and to not think about tennis. I have still been working out physically a little bit and obviously coming back to practicing step by step

Last year in Stuttgart, Swiatek won the title in her debut at the tournament.
Ahead of starting her Stuttgart title defense, Swiatek says she is not putting too much pressure on herself to do well in her first tournament back from injury.

“It’s the first tournament on clay, so for sure I would love to play well, but I also know that I might be a little bit rusty because coming back from injury it’s always a little bit like that. So, I’m keeping my expectations low, but for sure I want to play the best tennis possible,” Swiatek said.

Swiatek on tournaments returning to China Last week, the WTA announced tournaments will return to China in the fall. Previously, the WTA suspended all tournaments in China due to the Peng Shuai controversy. In its statement, the WTA said China promised players would be safe during their time in China.

“I just trust that the WTA is making right decision. I hope that we, as players, can be safe no matter what country we are from. I don’t have any kind of emotional influence because I have never even been to China. It’s hard for me to say anything, but I just hope that WTA is strategically making a good choice,” Swiatek said.
