Jon Rahm’s sly LIV Golf dig looks set to haunt him as Ryder Cup star seals £450m deal

Jon Rahm has made an earth-shattering switch from the PGA Tour to LIV Golf in a move that will net the Spaniard an incredible £450m, and with it dragging up a series of awkward previous comments made by the 29-year-old.

The Masters champions’ defection comes despite Rahm previously claiming that he did not like golf’s constant focus on money and was more concerned with winning the biggest prizes in the sport.

However this does not seem to be the case.

The 29-year-old’s reported flirtation with the Saudi-owned tour is significant for two reasons. Rahm has become one of the biggest names in golf behind Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy and is currently world No. 3. He was also a huge star of this year’s Ryder Cup in Rome.

Yet the timing of the move raises more questions than it answers. Back in June, the PGA Tour rocked golf by announcing that it had dropped legal battles with LIV Golf and reached a ‘framework agreement’ that would see the two warring operations effectively merge into one alongside the DP World Tour.

The Spaniard could probably be forgiven for giving the move prompt attention given the whopping £450million fee that is reportedly involved. But being motivated by money is something that Rahm has previously dismissed.

Whilst competing in the TOUR Championship at East Lake Golf Course in Atlanta, Georgia back in August, Rahm told reporters (as per the Golf Channel): “It’s one of the things that frustrates me about watching this broadcast. Like, we’re not thinking if we miss a putt how much it’s going to cost us money-wise. No chance. Like, none whatsoever.
