Jordan Spieth leaves caddie facing monstrous hangover as golf bet goes wrong
There’s never a dull round of golf when Jordan Spieth is playing, as the American’s stand-in caddie quickly discovered in the Bahamas on Thursday. Three-time major champion Spieth is at the Albany Golf Club for the PGA’s Hero World Challenge, where Tiger Woods is making his long-anticipated return to action.
With regular bagman Michael Greller unable to make the event Spieth’s friend Eric Leyendecker has stepped up to the job. But in a somewhat naive fashion, the new caddie agreed to a bet with the Ryder Cup star that had disaster written all over it from the word go.
According to Golf.com reporter Dylan Dethier, to keep his man motivated, Leyendecker agreed to down a beer for every birdie that Spieth made in the first round during the Dallas Cowboys’ NFL match on Thursday evening. And as an extra incentive, he would neck three bottles for any eagle.
It’s not clear how closely Leyendecker has watched Spieth play over the years, but he will surely be regretting that proposal now. The American finished his round in third place at four under par, but that is only half of the story.
Spieth sank six birdies and two eagles during his first round and would have been the runaway leader of the event had he not also slipped up with four bogeys and a double bogey during a hugely eventful round.
