Tennis world erupts over Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal news
The tennis world has erupted after the announcement both Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal aim to play at Laver Cup in 2022, which could see the pair team up in doubles for the last time.
Nadal returned from a six-month lay-off to complete one of his greatest ever comebacks to win the Australian Open and a record 21 grand slam titles.
The 35-year-old Spaniard missed Wimbledon, the Olympics and the US Open as a result of a foot injury that prompted him to consider calling time on his career.
However, Nadal prevailed in what has been described as the ‘greatest comeback’ in the Open Era to defeat Daniil Medvedev 2-6, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-4, 7-5 in the final.
Unfortunately, Federer was unable to return from injury in time to play at the Australian Open.
The 20-time grand slam champion hasn’t played since Wimbledon last July and had a third knee operation in August.
After two procedures on the knee in 2020, Federer made a short-lived return in 2021 before re-injuring it.
But despite recently turning 40, the Swiss champion is adamant that he wants to return to professional tennis.
And the Swiss maestro has confirmed his intention to play at the Laver Cup this September, along with Nadal.
Tennis fans remember the iconic scenes when ‘Fedal’ teamed up to play doubles together at the first edition of the Laver Cup.
And with both players in the twilight of their career, fans couldn’t be more excited for one last chance to see the two legends on the same side of the court.
