TOMMY GUN Ryder: Tommy Fleetwood is the down-to-earth superstar whose wife Clare is 20 years older than him

Team Europe hero and new dad stands out with his long hair but he is staying humble despite his meteoric rise at Le Golf National

TOMMY FLEETWOOD is the down-to-earth Ryder Cup superstar lighting up the city of love – thanks in part to his wife who is 20 years older than him.

The Southport sensation, 27, has become the first European rookie since Sergio Garcia in 1999 to win his first three matches.

And he has done it backed by wife and agent Clare, who he married in a Bahamas ceremony in October last year.

Their relationship is unique, something Fleetwood enjoys. Not only is their bond personal, but professional too.

One American journalist said the US would win the Ryder Cup in France easily because their side had “ten Tommy Fleetwoods”.

But the man himself replied: “None of them have long hair and almost all of them are taller than me, they also have American accents and mine is English, and my wife is 20 years older than me…”

It was Clare – mum to the couple’s one-year-old son Frankie – who Fleetwood credits with saving his career after he fell out of the world’s top 180 just two years ago.

Clare had two children – Oscar and Mo – from her first marriage and Fleetwood loves helping bring them up too.

In fact, his entire team is made up of his best friends. Giant caddie Ian Finnis is his closest pal and Fleetwood’s swing coach Alan Thompson is godfather to Frankie.

But it is with Clare that love flourished – although long-haired Fleetwood admits she wears the trousers.
