Andy Murray shares family frustration as children taken home during title win

Andy Murray revealed that his children missed out on watching him win the Lexus Surbiton Trophy. The world No 43 was cruising to victory when the rain came while he was leading by a set and a break. And his kids were forced to go home before he could close out the match 6-3 6-2.

Murray got his grass-court season off to the best start possible as he won the title in Surbiton. With the win, he became the oldest man ever to win a trophy on the grass at Challenger level.

It also marked the first time since 2016 that he won a trophy on home soil. The 36-year-old had been hoping to have his four children watch on as he clinched victory but his plans were ruined by the rain as play was halted with the Brit leading 6-3 3-1.

Murray also had triple break point when play was suspended and he raced to the finish line when they finally returned to the court three hours later. But he revealed that his children had arrived at the worst time possible – coming when the rain came and being taken home before the match could continue.

Speaking in the trophy presentation, the former world No 1 said: “It’s brilliant to win another one. My kids are always asking me when I go away if I come home with a trophy and that’s been rare these last few years.

“They actually came two minutes before the rain came my wife had to take them back home. So they’ve missed the end of the match but I think they’re watching on the TV so Sophia, Edie, Teddy and Lola – I hope you’re watching and I’ll bring you home a trophy tonight.”

Murray was also happy to get his grass-court season started with a trophy. The Brit decided to pull out of the French Open in order to give himself the best preparation possible ahead of Wimbledon and clearly made the right decision.

“Today for me was obviously a good win. Jurij played brilliant this whole week, had a great tournament and he’s won all of his matches really comfortably and started the match really well today so I was obviously happy to get through today,” Murray said.

“But it’s been a perfect start to the grass season. I chose to come and play here and in Nottingham to hopefully get lots of matches under my belt so this week has been the perfect start.”

Murray took a wildcard into next week’s Nottingham Challenger where he is the top seed. He is also set to play at Queen’s before Wimbledon begins.
