Andy Murray fights back tears as kids surprise him during winning speech on Father’s Day

Andy Murray fought back tears when he discovered his children were in the crowd to see him win for the first time on Father’s Day at the Rothesay Open in Nottingham.

The Scot beat French world No.181 Arthur Cazaux 6-4 6-4 in today’s final to win the second-tier Challenger event without dropping a set. The former world No.1 is now up to a provisional No.38 in the rankings and should ensure a seeding at Wimbledon by reaching the quarter-finals at the cinch Championship at Queen’s Club this week.

Speaking after lifting the trophy, Murray said: “I am obviously pumped. I am looking forward to a day’s rest tomorrow. I want to get back home because it is Father’s Day. Hopefully I will get to see my kids before bedtime.”

At this point his speech was interrupted by fans shouting out that Kim and their four children – Sophia, Edi, Teddy and Lola – were in the crowd at the Nottingham Tennis Centre.

An emotional Murray then had to compose himself before saying said: “Oh my God! I didn’t know they were here. I had no idea they were coming. They came last week to the final at Surbition and it started raining and they had to go home because it was bedtime and they missed the match.

“Then they had to go home for bedtime so they missed the end of the match so it is great they managed to come. They’re all here, thanks guys! I don’t know what else to say.”

The three-time Major winner added: “Obviously my family have been unbelievably supportive of my career when they could have easily asked me to stop. I really appreciate it. Thanks to all of them and my team and my physio for keeping my body going. I really appreciate my family and my team in moments like this.”
