Andy Murray shares Wimbledon ‘goal’ as Brit moves one step closer to defying the odds

Andy Murray has made his Wimbledon aims clear after making a winning start to his Nottingham Open campaign.

And he kept his winning streak going in Nottingham, beating the Netherlands’ Joris De Loore 6-3 6-4.

Murray is No 44 in the ATP world rankings and hasn’t breached the top 32 since April 16, 2018.

However, with three weeks to go until Wimbledon 2023 commences, Murray is eyeing a place among the seeded players in SW19.

He said: “I’ve got a day off [tomorrow], but I’ll come in and try to get a little bit more used to the conditions, the courts, and rest up in the afternoon.

“I want to get as deep as possible and try and get close to seeding for Wimbledon. That’s my goal for the next few weeks, so hopefully, I can get a bit closer this week.”

Murray suffered an early exit at last year’s Wimbledon, losing 4-6 6-7(4) 7-6(3) 4-6 against 24th-seeded American John Isner in the second round.

But he has made his aspirations of reaching the second week of this year’s competition clear as he hits his stride on the grass.

“I’d say these courts are more similar to how Wimbledon plays in the second week, so hopefully, I’m in the second week,” Murray explained.

“But the main thing for me is to obviously get as many matches as possible, playing in different conditions against different styles of opponent.

“He [De Loore] was a really big server and really went after his groundstrokes today, so it made it tough for me, but I managed to get through.”

Murray will face France’s Hugo Grenier in the next round of the Nottingham Open after his 6-4 6-4 win against Brit Jan Choinski.
