Andy Murray’s honest confession: “It gets harder as you get older”

Andy Murray and Stan Wawrinka will compete in a super-classic match, in the first round of the Roland Garros. Them will be one of the most awaited matches in Paris, in an incredible first round which also includes the challenge between Rafael Nadal and Alexander Zverev.

Murray told his feelings – also several anecdotes – during the media day of the French Open, also presenting the highly anticipated match against Wawrinka.

“The ankle is quite good, let’s be clear: when you come back from an injury everything becomes more difficult, especially as you get older. It’s difficult to replicate the intensity of a match in training, you need matches to get back into rhythm. Apart from some small pain, the ankle is responding well. Initially I thought it would be difficult to play here, injuries are difficult to predict but everything went smoothly,” he told.

Surprisingly, Wawrinka and I never faced each other as juniors but I remember facing him very early on at a professional level, in the Davis Cup when I was 18. We’ve had great matches over the years and to me it’s amazing that we are still competing at this level at our age. It’s always great to see each other again and I hope it’s an incredible atmosphere for both of us, Stan has had an incredible career and it’s still a pleasure to face him in a Grand Slam tournament,” he added.

A match that marked Andy’s career was the defeat at the Roland Garros against Wawrinka in the 2017 semi-finals.

“Already in the quarter-finals I felt that something was wrong. I had had hip problems for some time and in several matches I was defeated after leading 2 to 1. It happened at the US Open, in Davis and against Stan in Paris. In the fifth set of that match I felt like I couldn’t move, the night before I had terrible pain in my hip and I couldn’t sleep. I got up in the middle of the night and then moved to the couch feeling intense pain. My hip never recovered from that point,” analyzed Andy.
