“Just Needed to Stop”: Serena Williams Reveals Life’s Priorities Which Forced Her to Retire From Tennis

American tennis star Serena Williams has always been in the spotlight during her career and continues to remain so even after announcing her retirement from the sport last month. Serena Williams and her elder sister, Venus Williams, a seven-time Grand Slam champion, got candid with iconic actor Bradley Cooper in a recent interview.

Among the many issues they discussed, the 23-time Grand Slam winner’s retirement from tennis topped the list. She played her final match at Flushing Meadows’ Arthur Ashe Stadium where she lost to Tomljanovic in the third round.

What prompted Serena Williams to announce her retirement from tennis?
“I just needed to stop,” the former world number one explained to Hollywood legend Cooper about her choice to retire. “I always said I wanted to stop when I’m playing really good tennis and winning and beating good players. For me, it’s really about things I want to do spiritually and spending time with my daughter and family.”

The younger Williams mentioned how tough it was to strike a balance between her daughter Olympia and tennis. She revealed that she had lost several matches following the birth of her daughter in 2017. “I feel like I have given so much of my life to tennis, my entire life, that it’s time to do something different for me and also work on other things.” the American tennis ace further added.
