Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods welcome three Ryder Cup stars as new golf league takes shape

Three European Ryder Cup stars in Tommy Fleetwood, Shane Lowry and Tyrrell Hatton have all joined Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods ‘ innovative golf league ‘TGL’.

TGL is set to begin in January 2024, and will see six teams of PGA Tour players compete against each other across a virtual course at a custom built venue. A whole host of big names are set to compete, including founders McIlroy and Woods.

And the latest to join the innovative league are Fleetwood, Lowry and Hatton, fresh off their Ryder Cup victory in Rome. One of the PGA Tour’s hottest rising stars in Tom Kim has also been added to the roster.

The three Europeans have shown exactly what they can do when it comes to team golf, after shining in Rome last week. On joining the TGL team, Irishman Lowry said: “Everything I’ve heard about TGL is really intriguing. Between Ryder Cups and World Cups, I’ve always enjoyed playing with a partner or for a team.

“It’s great to see golf being creative and trying new things. I imagine this will be a lot of fun.” And this was echoed by Fleetwood, who commented: “I have been excited about the TGL since it was announced. Many of my fondest memories in golf have been playing in team competitions.

“With the players who have already been announced along with the names and stature of the ownership groups and investors, the league is in position to showcase our sport in a cool format to a new group of viewers and fans.” Along with Woods and McIlroy, the four new names join a strong list of players.

Some of the PGA Tour’s biggest stars in Jon Rahm, Collin Morikawa, Justin Thomas, Matt Fitzpatrick, Justin Rose, Adam Scott, Xander Schauffele, Max Homa, Rickie Fowler and Billy Horschel have already committed to compete in the inangural season, that will consist of 15 regular season matches, followed by semi-finals and a final.
