Rory McIlroy wife: ‘We have really tried’ The Open star opens up on life with Erica Stoll

Golf professional and The Open star Rory McIlroy, 30, insisted while his wife Erica Stoll, 31, is supportive of him, she prefers to stay out of the limelight.

“Erica has been around me quite a lot at tournaments but we have really just tried to keep it low key,” he told The Independent.

“She is a very low key person, not the kind to broadcast stuff, but that side of my life is really good just now.

“We are excited, our parents are excited so it is a really happy time.”

They married in the grounds of Ashworth Castle in Ireland in front of guests including Chris Martin and Niall Horan.

The duo first laid eyes on each other at the PGA tournament of America in 2012, in which he was playing and she was working.

Rory had overslept before his game, prompting Erica to provide him with a police escort to get him to the course on time.

“The thing I love about it is that we were friends before anything romantic happened,” he added of his spouse.

”I found it refreshing being with someone who was living a normal life rather than, ‘Oh! My jet is 30 minutes late!’”
