Andy Murray reacts to Serena Williams’ impact and greatness on tennis, see full details
Andy Murray has paid tribute to Serena Williams, calling her “bigger than the sport” and praising her impact on tennis and beyond.
Williams retired from professional tennis in September 2022 after a glittering career that saw her win 23 Grand Slam singles titles, more than any other player in the Open Era. She was also a dominant force in doubles tennis, winning 14 Grand Slam titles with her sister Venus.
Murray, who has won three Grand Slam singles titles himself, said that Williams’ impact on tennis has been immense.
“Serena has been a huge part of all of our careers,” Murray told Sky Sports. “She’s dominated for so long and been on the tour for so long. It’s obviously sad for tennis that she’s retired, but what an unbelievable career she’s had. She’s done a lot for the sport, but she’s also a lot bigger than that. She’s inspired a lot of people across the world.“
Murray also said that Williams’ greatness transcends tennis.
“She’s an icon,” he said. “She’s a role model for so many people. She’s shown that anything is possible if you work hard and believe in yourself.“
Murray’s comments are just one example of the many tributes that have been paid to Williams since her retirement. She is widely regarded as one of the greatest tennis players of all time, and her impact on the sport will be felt for many years to come.
