US Ryder Cup ace Justin Thomas ‘hated’ Rory McIlroy as he makes wife confession
Justin Thomas knows he is a lucky man to be in Rome this week but he is happy to go to war with friend Rory McIlory again and anyone else who might get in his way.
Justin Thomas is prepared to “hate” good friend Rory McIlroy for 18 holes at the Ryder Cup after admitting that he would defeat his wife “pretty bad” on the course if she was playing for Europe. The two-time PGA Championship winner boasts an enviable record in the biannual event, winning six and a half points out of a possible nine, but even he knows that he is fortunate to have been included as a wildcard choice in Zach Johnson’s team.
Thomas has seen his form nose-dive during 2023, missing the cut at six events including The Masters, the US Open and the Open Championship at Royal Liverpool, where he shot an 82.
Nevertheless, his Ryder Cup track record was deemed good enough to earn him a place, with skipper Johnson describing Thomas as the “heart and soul of American teams” and the “emotional leader”.
Thomas’ inclusion has drawn plenty of criticism on both sides of the Atlantic, but the 30-year-old has admitted that it was to be expected and purposely withdrew himself from social media in order to avoid the fall-out.
Speak in Rome ahead of Friday’s curtain-raiser, he said: “When it comes to people and stuff online, everybody’s got an opinion and theirs is right and everybody else’s is wrong.
