Tiger Woods leaves St Andrews residents furious with controversial development plans

Plans released by golf icon Tiger Woods to develop a new sports bar at St Andrews have left local residents furious. Woods announced plans with singer/actor Justin Timberlake, who is also a business partner and friend of the 15-time major champion.

The plans involve the development of a sports bar named “T-Squared” near the Old Course at St Andrews in Scotland. The duo already have a “T-Squared” gastropub in Manhattan, New York in what is the first unit for the venture.

Now plans have been announced to build a second site near the home of golf, where Woods has previously won two Open Championships in 2000 and 2005. The plans have been submitted to the Fife Council, which would see the 1930s cinema New Picture House converted into a golf-themed sports bar.

However, it seems the plans have left some local residents far from pleased with the idea of a sports bar being introduced near the famous golf course. St Andrews Community Council member Neil Dobson labeled the plans put forward by Woods and Timberlake as “disrespectful”.

“What’s next, Trump buying the West Sands for a hotel?” Dobson told The Courier. “I find this very disrespectful and a bit cheeky, to be honest.

“This town has been very good to Tiger Woods and this is not the way to repay residents. St Andrews is unique and that building is iconic. An American bar is completely out of keeping.”

As part of the announcement of the plans, Woods outlined the connection he has with the home of golf thanks to his two major championship wins and having returned to the course over the length of his career. The 47-year-old detailed the thought process he and Timberlake had when deciding to bring their sports bar venture to Scotland.
