Tiger Woods ‘to be offered Ryder Cup role’ and golf legend has already made feelings clear
Tiger Woods is being lined up to become the USA’s next Ryder Cup captain after Zach Johnson’s team were humbling 16.5-11.5 in Rome last weekend. That’s according to Davis Love III, who believes that the 15-times major champion is ready to make the next step in his illustrious career
The inquest is underway across the Atlantic after the Americans were swept away by their hosts in the Friday morning foursomes session at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club – a hammer blow that they were never able to recover from.
Love twice captained the US Ryder Cup team, in 2012 and 2016 but now believes that the job is 47-year-old Woods’ if he wants it.
“We’ve got to call Tiger Woods and ask him,” Love told NBC at the PGA Tour Champions’ Furyk & Friends on Thursday.
“I think if he wants – obviously Tiger’s into a lot of stuff right now, but it’s kind of his call, I would say. I hate to put pressure on him, but it’s kind of his call. Obviously, with some guys out, he’s the next logical choice.”
Veteran star Phil Mickelson has played in more Ryder Cups than any other US player with 12 appearances and has long been tipped to be a future captain. But the 53-year-old has burnt bridges by joining the Saudi-funded LIV Golf tour and has also had to face allegations that he attempted to place a bet on the 2012 Ryder Cup – a claim that he has denied.
