Holger Rune has rubbished the idea of a new Big-3 in men’s tennis, consisting of himself, Carlos Alcaraz, and Jannik Sinner. The 19-year-old Dane said that it is “too early to say” if the three players will go on to dominate the sport in the same way that Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Roger Federer have done for the past two decades.
Rune is the only one of the three players to have won a Grand Slam title, having won the French Open junior title in 2020. Alcaraz has reached the quarterfinals of the French Open and the US Open, while Sinner has reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open and the Wimbledon Championships.
However, Rune believes that it is too early to say if the three players will be able to sustain their success at the highest level. “Only one of us has won a Grand Slam,” he said. “It’s too early to say if we will be able to dominate the sport in the same way that the Big-3 have done.”
Rune is right to be cautious. The Big-3 have been so successful because they have been able to maintain their level of play for many years. Nadal, Djokovic, and Federer have all won multiple Grand Slam titles in their 30s. It is not clear if Alcaraz, Sinner, and Rune will be able to do the same.
However, Rune is certainly one to watch. He is a talented player with a big serve and a powerful forehand. He is also mentally tough and doesn’t seem to be fazed by big occasions. If he can continue to improve, he could be a major force in men’s tennis for many years to come.
Only time will tell if Rune is right to be cautious about the new Big-3. But one thing is for sure, tennis fans are in for a treat in the years to come with these three young players on the rise.
