Tennis fans split on Andy Murray after Wimbledon as Carlos Alcaraz copies Brit

Andy Murray endured disappointment at Wimbledon, having been knocked out in the second round.

Express Sport readers are divided on whether Andy Murray should retire or not. The results of our latest poll revealed that 51.3% (6519 votes) believe he should walk away from the sport for good while 49.7% (6173 votes) want to see him continue.

Ten years to the day that he defeated Novak Djokovic to lift his first Wimbledon title, Murray was knocked out of this year’s tournament in the second round by No 5 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas. Meanwhile, 20-year-old Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz went on to become the second man to defeat Djokovic in a Wimbledon final after the Brit.

As a new crop of talent come through the passing of the baton is inevitable. Roger Federer retired last year while Rafael Nadal is expected to play one more season before bowing out.

Given Murray’s struggles in the past few years many believe he will be the next big name to make an exit. Although Murray admits that one more injury could spell an end to his career he has no plans to retire anytime soon. “I’m not planning on stopping after I’ve won the tournament here,” he said ahead of the grass-court Grand Slam

“I have an idea in my head of when I would like to stop. That’s not definitive. A lot of that is just I think it is good to do that so you can start planning a little bit.

“But, yeah, I don’t think I would announce anything, like, way ahead of time because I want to play as long as I can whilst I’m still feeling good physically and competitive. I’m aware, based on how my last sort of five, six years have gone, that things can change very quickly, as well. I’m keeping an open mind to that. Yeah, I do have an idea of when I’d like to stop, yeah.”
