But Judy Murray decided to defy this tradition at the wedding of her own son Andy Murray.
The 55-year-old seemed to have no qualms about upstaging the tennis ace’s wife Kim Sears as she waved happily to photographers as she arrived at Dunblane Cathedral in her shining white dress coat.
Judy showed off her trim figure in the stylish number, which was belted at the waist to reveal her tiny frame.
The mother-of-the-groom attached a small posy of flowers to her lapel.
Beneath the coat, the tennis coach could be seen to be wearing a nude pencil skirt and a lace blouse – though it is unknown whether she will decide to spare Kim from any embarrassing moments by taking her outerwear off for the ceremony.
Judy completed the look with a pair of nude hells and carried a small clutch bag in her hand.
She added a stylish oversized hat and couldn’t stop herself from smiling from ear to ear as she entered the church.
It’s been dubbed ‘Scotland’s Royal wedding’ things didn’t run as smoothly for Andy Murray and Kim Sears as it did for Kate and Wills.
Despite planning a Spring wedding, the unpredicatible Scottish weather has sent a flurry of snow to Dunblane.
However – always one to look on the positive side – the 27-year-old tennis ace’s mum, Judy, tweeted her excitment at the prospect of a white wedding.
The 55-year-old wrote: “Snowing. #whitewedding”.
The mother-of-the-groom had clearly keeping a nervous eye on the weather all morning, ahead of the ceremony which is expected to take place around 4pm.
