Andy Murray’s brother rubs salt in wounds after Wimbledon exit as return to SW19 in doubt

Jamie Murray has spoken out on his brother’s prospects of returning to Wimbledon next year after crashing out in the second round.

Andy Murray’s brother, Jamie, has reflected on the devastating nature of the 36-year-old’s Wimbledon exit at the hands of Stefanos Tsitsipas. A look back on the circumstances could be uncomfortable for the two-time champion at SW19, who suggested after the match that he may not return to the All England Club in 12 months’ time.

Murray came into Wimbledon claiming to be in fighting shape, having grappled with injury issues over the past few years of his career. The Brit’s form was evidenced by a dominant win over compatriot Ryan Peniston in the first round, during which he lost only four games.

But the stakes were always set to ramp up when Murray drew fifth seed Tsitsipas so early in the tournament. The veteran was two sets to one up when play was paused due to the 11pm curfew, and Tsitsipas came back to win once the match resumed the following day.

A gutted Murray then claimed that ‘motivation’ could be an issue when weighing up whether to return to next year’s tournament, having failed to make it any further than the third round since 2017.

His brother, Jamie, who has twice won the mixed doubles title at SW19, rubbed salt in the wounds by pointing out how a favourable draw could have seen Murray put together an impressive run.
