Nadal off to a solid start to the Australian Open
Nadal didn’t have much luck with his draw when he drew promising Briton Jack Draper in the first round.
Draper, who reached the Adelaide 2 semifinal last week, competed well against Nadal but the defending Australian Open champion escaped with a 7-5 2-6 6-4 6-1. After the match was over, Nadal was full of praise for 21-year-old Draper.”He’s a great player with a lot of potential, young.
A great future in front, I think. So was a tough, tough match. Full respect for him. Wish him well for the future. I think he is in the right position to have a very productive season. I am happy that I was able to win against a great player this afternoon,” Nadal said of Draper.
After losing the third set, Draper broke Nadal in the first game of the second set. Then, Draper started experiencing cramps as Nadal won six consecutive games to complete a four-set win. After the match, Draper was asked why he didn’t retire when clearly impacted by cramps.“No, I feel like if you’re maybe 3-1 down or 2-1 down in a fourth set after three and a half hours, the other guy’s had to work hard to get in that position.
I’ve learnt over time just don’t retire in that situation, like, let them win the match as they probably are going to. Even if I’m in a lot of pain, just get through the match and let him have the win like he should do. Otherwise retirement, you retired, whatever. Just finish the match,” Draper explained.
