It’s back to winning ways for PGA Tour superstar Rickie Fowler. The 34-year-old has finally secured victory on the tour after a dire run that lasted for more than four years. For a man who has been seen as the heir apparent since his junior days, the win would have lifted a heavy weight off his shoulder.
The golfer himself was at hand to describe the feeling in a recent podcast. But was his calm celebration pre-decided, or did it come out naturally at the Rocket Mortgage Classic winner?
Rickie Fowler describes his winning moment
The Oklahoma State University alum was on the ‘Smylie Show’ podcast, where he held an interaction with former golfer-turned-on-course reporter Smylie Kaufman. The duo’s chats revolved around the former’s win at the Detroit Golf Club, which made Fowler a six-time PGA TOUR winner.
While the Florida native has been playing some of his best golf, it never materialized into a victory. Fowler was in a prime position to lift his inaugural major championship title at the US Open last month, but he choked on the last hole to lose his glorious chance.
Yet, the Rocket Mortgage Classic seemed to get away from Fowler at the closing stages of the tournament. The former World No. 1 amateur needed a clutch birdie to force the tie into playoffs.
He eventually won, which broke a sigh of relief from the golfer. Fowler stood his ground while looking at the sky, while his caddie, Ricky Romano, leaped onto him for a hug.
Fowler tried to describe what went through his head for the final putt. “I didn’t really see it until the last couple of feet, because it was only 12 feet or so. I hit the putt and by the time I look up, it’s already halfway,” he said.
“It looks good but… You can catch a footprint, it can bump. This putt held, it should be good, and went in the right center and that was just, was kind of a huge relief,” he added.
Why didn’t Rickie Fowler celebrate moments after his win?
Standing there with his shades on, Fowler made the winning putt to the joy of onlookers around. While the entire course celebrated, the champion golfer stood there without displaying any emotions, calmly looking at the sky.
What went through the golfer’s mind after the win? As Fowler described the surreal feeling, it was more of a thankful feeling that his winless phase was finally over. “Thank you. It’s finally over,” he revealed in the podcast.
