‘I wanted to leave every day’: Tyson Fury’s wife Paris reveals she thought about ending their marriage as his ‘dark depression’ and alcohol abuse spiralled out of control
Paris Fury ‘thought about leaving’ husband Tyson ‘every day’ as his depression and drinking escalated during a desperate three year hiatus from professional boxing.
The flamboyant sportsman beat long odds to become Unified World Heavyweight Champion after defeating Ukrainian Wladimir Klitchko on points in a hotly contested bout at Düsseldorf’s Esprit Arena in 2015.
But after claiming multiple heavyweight titles on the night, Fury’s world rapidly fell apart as he succumbed to years of mental health problems, alcohol abuse and obesity.
She told The Mirror: ‘I wanted to leave every day. Every day I used to cry and break down and think “I can’t deal with this.”
‘I literally packed the car and the kids a few times. I’d think “how can I leave?” If you truly love someone you’re not going to leave them to crash and burn.’
Paris was 15 when she met a 17-year old Tyson; the couple would go on to marry in 2008 in a traditional gypsy wedding at Doncaster’s St. Peter in Chains Catholic Church.
But as his bleak moods and destructive habits worsened, she felt powerless to help the man she fell in love with.
‘He was drinking excessively for days on end and then he’d come home and in the times he wasn’t drinking he’d be in a dark depression,’ she recalled.
