Phil Mickelson makes ‘confident’ claim as he finally weighs in on LIV-PGA merger
The outspoken golfer has finally broken his silence surrounding the controversial merger between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf
American golfer Phil Mickelson has spoken out on the PGA Tour and LIV Golf merger weeks after the announcement. The deal between the two rival tours shocked both players and fans alike and is still a topic of much contention.
The merger put an end to a high-profile litigation battle which angered many of the sports most influential players. The Saudi-backed league, which started in June 2022, saw many golfers make the move from the PGA Tour for large multi-million pound fees.
Mickelson was one of the first players to jump ship after agreeing a lucrative sum. The 53-year-old signed a staggering $200 million (£158 million) deal and has remained vocal on his decision to join the league.
The six-time major winner has now finally given his thoughts on the agreed merger. Mickelson spoke out ahead of LIV’s first event in Mainland Europe this season, a 54-hole tournament at Valderrama in Andalucia.
“I would say I felt appreciation that we got to this point where we’re working together because it makes me confident with where the game of golf is headed in the future,” he said.
