Andy Murray warned against retirement as stark Serena Williams point made by Laura Robson

Andy Murray has been warned by fellow Brit Laura Robson not to retire any time soon, having been compared to both Serena and Venus Williams. He is set to compete in his 15th Wimbledon tournament having reached the top 40 for the first time since his two hip surgeries in 2018 and 2019.

The 36-year-old has previously hinted that he knows when he will quit the sport and could follow the likes of Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal, with the Swiss star retiring last year and Nadal announcing that he too will leave professional tennis in 2024. However, Robson believes that Murray can continue playing at the top level and hit out at those trying to retire him early.

“It just seems to me like he really enjoys it and loves the competition,” Robson told Eurosport. “He loves playing, and that’s enough for some people to keep going. And he’s won everything there is to win, almost. And he really is playing just because he wants to be out there.

“I hate this feeling of trying to retire people before they’re ready. We’ve seen it so often with Serena [Williams] and Venus [Williams] and other champions just let them play for as long as they want to.

“He’s clearly doing well enough to just be outside of the top 32 seeds without a huge amount of tennis under his belt when you look at how almost little he played over the last year. So really the last few months is the only time that he’s been healthy enough to get some consistent tennis in. I feel like he’s right up there still, so there’s no reason to stop anytime soon.”
