Andy Murray gives take on if Novak Djokovic is the GOAT after historic 23rd Slam win
Andy Murray says Novak Djokovic is the greatest of all time if the only metric used is the number of Grand Slam titles. Following his French Open triumph, Djokovic won a record-breaking 23rd Grand Slam title – the Serb is now ahead of Rafael Nadal (22) and Roger Federer (20).
Now that Djokovic solely owns the all-time Grand Slam record for the first time in his life, some think there shouldn’t be any doubts regarding the greatest of all time debate. But there are still those who believe that the greatest of all time cannot be solely based on the number of Grand Slams.
Murray, a three-time Grand Slam champion, seemingly agrees with the latter claim. “If you go on Grand Slam titles you have to give it to Novak, but for me, it’s slightly more nuanced than that,” Murray told Sky News.
Murray latest to be asked if Djokovic is the GOAT
Recently, Federer hailed Djokovic’s achievements as “incredible” but he didn’t call Djokovic nor anyone else the GOAT. Nadal himself has also always stayed out of declaring himself or anyone else the GOAT.
After winning a historic 23 Grand Slam title, Djokovic was directly asked whether he felt he was the greatest of all time. “I don’t want to say that I am the greatest, because I feel it’s disrespectful towards all the great champions in different eras of our sport that was played in completely different way than it is played today.
So I leave those kind of discussions of who is the greatest to someone else. I have of course huge faith and confidence and belief in myself and for everything that I am and who I am and what I am capable of doing,” Djokovic said.
In Paris, Djokovic also highlighted that he was hungry for more Grand Slam success. Djokovic’s next big goal is to win the upcoming Wimbledon.
