Andy Murray learns tough Surbiton draw with Wimbledon warm-up against Djokovic’s conqueror
Andy Murray faces a blockbuster first-round match at the Surbiton Challenger. The world No 43 opted to skip the French Open to give himself more time on the grass ahead of Wimbledon. But he has a tough draw in Hyeon Chung – the Korean sensation who famously upset Novak Djokovic at the 2018 Australian Open.
Murray’s grass-court campaign will get underway next week as the two-time Wimbledon champion looks to give himself the best preparation possible for SW19. The Brit is the second seed in Surbiton but that hasn’t stopped him from avoiding an easy draw.
The 36-year-old will face Chung in the first round – the former world No 19 who is mounting a comeback after spending years on the sidelines injured. Now 27, the Korean was touted as the next big thing in tennis when he won the inaugural Next Gen Finals before beating Djokovic at the Australian Open.
Then aged 21, Chung was part of the first-ever crop of #NextGenATP stars and beat out the likes of Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev to win the 21-and-under event in its maiden year. And he proved that he was the cream of the crop when he made a major breakthrough at the Australian Open just two months later.
Chung got his first top-10 win over Alexander Zverev in the third round. And in his next match, he caused one of the upsets of the tournament, beating then-six-time Aussie Open champion Djokovic in straight sets.
