Rory McIlroy swears silence on LIV saga at US Open as Phil Mickelson heckled on green
Rory McIlroy appears only interested in letting his golf do the talking at the US Open this week, while the dust continues to settle on the PGA Tour’s bombshell merger agreement with LIV Golf. The Northern Irishman has been front and centre of the PGA Tour’s power struggle with LIV Golf but found himself in front of the cameras last week after the two warring tours stunned the world of golf by announcing that they would merge together alongside the DP World Tour.
The unexpected collaboration was announced without World No. 3 McIlroy having any prior notice and despite admitting that he had come to accept that Saudi Arabia was investing heavily in the sport, he conceded that his unequivocal defence of the PGA Tour had now made him feel like a ‘sacrificial lamb’.
McIlory and other top golfers like Tiger Woods and Jon Rahm turned down millions on offer to join LIV Golf’s breakaway league but will soon find themselves playing on the same circuit as the rebels who took the Saudi money regardless.
This week’s US Open is the first tournament since the landmark announcement that pits LIV Golf and PGA Tour players against each other, giving reporters plenty of questions to put to representatives of both sides.
